The Disadvantages of Fruitarianism 1. Today fruits can be costly and usually they are not so fresh and are of a bad quality due to shipping, refrigeration, fumigation, and other post-harvest processing. Also if you don’t have year-round access to good quality local fruit you won’t be able to follow fruitarian diet.
2. People who are on strict fruitarian diet may suffer from severe weight loss. It may also lead to anorexia nervosa or starvation. You won’t be able to gain weight on this diet even if you eat too many avocados.
3. There is a thought among fruitarians that a person can achieve positive results on the ideal, natural fruitarian diet if he or she has faith or positive thinking. But, if you need faith in order to reach your goals it means that this diet is not as perfect and natural as it is promoted.
4. It is very hard to follow this diet. You will feel hunger and cravings all the time. As a result, in most cases it may lead to backsliding, cheating and binge eating .
5. Fruitarianism can cause food obsession. As in case of anorexic, a person that follows a fruitarian diet can have an obsessive attitude toward food and the pathological fear.
6. You can easily overeat on this diet which may cause sugar addiction. Sugar can create food cravings and it may result in binge eating and/or overeating.
7. Fruit which is grown nowadays has higher sugar content than wild and uncultivated fruits. So, if you eat only fruits you may have diabetes-like symptoms: sugar craving, excessive urination and thirst, sugar highs/blues, exhaustion.
Excessive sugar intake can be also harmful for your pancreas. That’s why it is necessary to add to the diet some dark, bitter, leafy greens. They are helpful in regulating your sugar metabolism and lessening sugar cravings.
8. Fruitarian diets can create a social isolation which can be very difficult for some people. Such isolation can lead to psychological deprivation and cause backsliding and binge eating.
9. Most fruitarians quit dieting because it is too hard for them to follow it. They can’t bear the intense food obsessions, social isolation, psychological deprivation and the constant feeling of hunger anymore.
You shouldn’t think that this diet is positive. Fruitarianism can develop an obsessive fear of cooked food, mucus or protein. If such condition occurs it can create an eating disorder.
