The Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) is a prescribed diet for obese patients. Every day intake consists of three milkshake-like formula drinks - made with powder concentrate and water, - which supply about 2000 kilojoules (500 Calories) and all required vitamins and minerals.
There are plentiful risks to this diet. A patient who drinks more formula than acceptable can get too much iron and selenium. The other problem is constipation: extra water and (fiber) laxatives may be required. Immune response may be compromised. VLCDs often result in the formation of gallstones.
Very low calorie diet should only be used only in case when a patient's body mass index goes beyond 30. This diet requires usual consultation between patient and doctor.
VLCD can be very thriving when used over a six to twelve week period. Afterwards as with all starvation diets, metabolism will descend. A rational diet-and-exercise plan must follow end of VLCD or weight will be gained back.
