Many people choose different vegetarian diets. True vegetarians don’t eat meat at all as well as chicken and fish. A lacto-ovo vegetarian can consume dairy products and eggs but avoids meat, fish and poultry. So, a lacto vegetarian eats dairy products but not eggs, whereas an ovo vegetarian eats eggs and excludes dairy products.
There is also more stringent form of vegetarianism called veganism (pronounced: vee-gun-izm). They avoid consuming not only eggs and dairy products from their diet but also animal products like honey and gelatin.
Some macrobiotic diets can be included in the vegan category. Macrobiotic diets ban the consumption of animal products, refined and processed foods, foods containing preservatives and foods that have caffeine or other stimulants.
A macrobiotic or vegan diet can cause nutritional deficiency in some individuals. Teens’ nutrition should include essential nutrients to fuel growth, particularly protein and calcium. There are also people that call themselves semi-vegetarians.They can eat fish and small portions of poultry. But their diet mostly includes vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds and nuts. A pesci-vegetarian’s menu may contain fish but not poultry.
Are vegetarian diets safe for teens? Few years ago choosing not to eat meat or animal-based foods was extraordinary. But the times have changed and the attitude to this diet has dramatically altered. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has officially approved vegetarianism. It reported that "appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, are nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases."
It means that if you are a vegetarian or you want to become one of them it will be very beneficial for you. There are plenty of foods that can be taken and also a lot of restaurants and schools nowadays have vegetarian menus.
The main point of vegetarian diet is proper education. That's why the ADA states that a vegetarian diet should be "appropriately planned." It is not enough to omit certain foods from your diet if you want to become healthy, have a lot of energy, increase the muscle and bone strength.
